Dear readers,
since coronavirus (Covid-19) has been declared a global pandemic, I think it’s time we accept that this is something we need not fold our hands to. While we are going about trying to keep ourselves pretty in our own skin, we have to also keep ourselves safe.
I understand how hard and risky it is to go out in situations like this; meeting with different people (students, parents, co-worker, fellow group members, co-passengers etc), on a daily basis, especially when you are in a country that has recorded cases and spread of the virus. Let me show you 23 of the best ways to protect yourself and others from the coronavirus covid-19. These things are what I do myself and don’t mind sharing.

About The Coronavirus Covid-19 Disease

According to WHO, the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) also called 2019 Novel Coronavirus, is an infectious disease caused by a new virus that had not been previously identified in humans.
In humans, this can cause respiratory tract infections that are typically mild, such as some cases of the common cold, bronchitis, and in some cases can be lethal.
There are yet to be vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent or treat the coronavirus (Covid-19), this means that we just have to take serious measures to prevent ourselves from getting exposed to the virus directly or indirectly. And if you know someone who has already been exposed to it, encourage them to stay indoors, pray and hope for the best while we do same.

Symptoms Of The Coronavirus Covid-19

The coronavirus (Covid-19) causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever and in more severe cases, pneumonia.
Be on the alert, and be sure that people who may experience symptoms like these are advised to go for checkup. Other symptoms to look out for include:

  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Difficulty in breathing (severe cases)

Should You Be Bothered About Coronavirus Covid-19?

Well, this is a very tricky question. Some people may say it’s not their problem because it has not reached their country, or have not affected someone they know themselves. Personally, I am bothered about the coronavirus covid-19 and I think we all should be. Imagine every single time one tune into a news station, there’s a new public figure that is reportedly tested positive to the virus. This is something to worry about because we are all aware that these people do come in contact with a whole lot of people whether directly or indirectly.

Don’t forget, the virus doesn’t show signs immediately. This means, a lot of people who have it may not detect it on time and would have touched others unknowingly. If this doesn’t bother, I don’t know what else would. The most important thing is for us to not panic, but instead, take careful and conscious measures to protect ourselves and others

Best Ways To Prevent Yourself From Coronavirus Covid-19

In the quest of living our lives to the fullest and striving to stay pretty, our safety too is paramount. On this note, I’d like to advise you on some safety rules to guard against the pandemic coronavirus:

  1. The number one rule is to protect yourself and others!
  2. Don’t sneeze or cough on your palm. It’s advisable to use a tissue paper or place your mouth at the crook of your elbow.
  3. Don’t spit in public areas, most especially inside gutters or unmoving water that is located where many people are found.
  4. If you get mucus or spit on your skin for any reason, wipe or wash it off immediately.
  5. Always wash your hands thoroughly and frequently with a good hand sanitizer or an antiseptic soap.
  6. If you are using a tap, make it your habit to wash the knob before washing your hands so that you don’t pick up dirt again when you reach to turn it off.
  7. Ensure you take your bath regularly with antiseptic soaps, especially at night after spending time outside or mingling with people during the day.
  8. Use face masks often. If you are using the regular, disposable surgical mask, ensure that you wear them properly. Remember you are trying to protect yourself so wear the white side out. Wearing the green/blue side out means that you are protecting others from your disease.girl-in-mask-for-coronavirus-covid19
  9.  If you must, use disposable hand gloves regularly, especially when your job or other daily activities require touching people unavoidably.
  10. Avoid touching your face or skin with unwashed hands. Don’t eat with unwashed hands either.
  11. Avoid eating outside too often, especially at local joints and Chinese restaurants. Prepare your meals yourself to be sure you buy the ingredients from trusted suppliers.
  12. Eat healthy foods always to help your immune system in any way.
  13. Regularly and thoroughly clean surfaces in your home like countertops, tables, doorknobs etc with a disinfectant.
  14. Once you start feeling the slightest bit of sickness, please try to seek medical help.
  15. Don’t assume it’s a little fever or migraine that would go away.
  16. Avoid close contact with people who are sick, especially those who you can’t determine what’s going on with them. Also, try to STAY HOME when you’re sick or down with something.
  17. Avoid crowdy places because you never know who has gotten an indirect contact with a patient.
  18. Unless it’s VERY necessary, I’ll recommend you limit your movements and put a hold on all travels.
  19. For now, try to avoid buying used clothes as you can’t tell if it’s a virus patient that has used it previously.
  20. DO NOT use social media to spread false information about the virus. This is very important as a good number of the world’s population is relying on what they read online. So any wrong information can send people into panic mode. That is the last thing we need right now.
  21. The most reliable sources of information on the coronavirus covid-19 at this point are still the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control’s coronavirus page, federal, state or local health agencies as they have better and credible information you need to know about the virus.
  22. Pay no attention to misleading Whatsapp messages asking you to do a self-test by ‘holding your breath for 10 seconds’, ‘sip water every 15 minutes’, ‘be glad that there’s enough sun each day’, ‘heat can kill the virus’ etc. These things are discouraging people from seeking medical help which is a wrong move.
  23. Use a good alcohol hand sanitizer to wash your hands thoroughly as often as possible.
  24. Buy enough foodstuff to stock up your house in case of an emergency.
  25. PRAY ALWAYS for this whole situation.

How To Make Alcohol Hand Sanitizer At Home

Of course, we’ve been told to wash our hands with alcohol hand sanitizers as they are more effective. If you ask me, I’ll say you stay home and make your own hand sanitizer to help you in the fight against the virus. This way, you have better control of what goes into the product; you are sure to never run out of them; you make more at a cheaper rate, and you get to avoid contact with more people when you hit the mall and join the rush to get some for yourself.

Not to mention that commercial hand sanitizer is getting more expensive, and with the shortage of hand sanitizer due to coronavirus covid-19, you may have to resort to making your own. Trust me, making your own hand sanitizer is a simple process and you can switch it to suit your taste. Here is a book I found on Amazon about the beginner’s guide to homemade hand sanitizer. It contains quick and easy recipes to make your own natural homemade hand sanitizer.

Or you could just try a quick way I make my own hand sanitizer at home. I got the video from YouTube and you’ll be surprised that the ingredients are something that you can easily lay your hands on.

If the above youtube video about the do-it-yourself (DIY) homemade alcohol hand sanitizer formula from WHO is not clear enough, you can just visit the site and search for anyone you can easily work with.

This way, you don’t have to wait till you get home before you can get yourself disinfected. No matter where you are, you’re never far from hand hygiene.
